Programme for 2019

Storytelling and Posttraumatic Growth/ Erzählkunst und posttraumatisches Wachstum

With/Mit  Minka Straube, Martin Straube and Micaela Sauber

4th-11th May/Mai 2019

Languages /Sprachen: English and German – Deutsch und Englisch

Post-traumatic growth is not only possible, it opens up whole new experiences. Major artists such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Pablo Picasso are proof of this, as are innumerable and lesser-known lives.

If you already work by telling traditional tales and fairytales, or wish to learn about doing so; if you work in teaching, therapy or social work, then this intensive seminar will meet your needs.

We offer: exploring and learning in mythical surroundings and powerfully healing countryside, cared for by Greek hospitality.

Three experts in storytelling, trauma, trauma therapy and trauma pedagogics will lead the seminar. Our doctor (and artist) Martin Straube shows what trauma is, its effects and where we can help by storytelling. From this we develop what we need to work with traumatised people.

Minka Straube is a trauma pedagogue. Micaela Sauber, storyteller, is trained as a teacher for children with special needs and as a social therapist, and is an expert in the healing art of storytelling. During the seminar there will be opportunities for individual work with our team of experts, and naturally within the group. Ideas for future projects can be triggered and an outline developed.

 What is post-traumatic growth?

People who have been through a crisis or a trauma have experienced something which those who have not so suffered will never know.

They find themselves at a crossroad in their life, one which opens different possibilities of development.

We speak of a post-traumatic growth when someone who has lived through a trauma can transform the experience into a positive manner.

A person who has lived through a dramatic situation will value the fact that they are still alive more highly than someone whose life has never been under threat. Having been unexpectedly granted an extension of life, the question of what to do with it is far more immediate than for someone who has never been confronted their life ending. Having experienced how others can help in extremity, human relationships and friendship are a greater gift: literally essential. Those who imagined they could never regain resilience, often feel as if a higher power has been involved, leading to a deepening of their spirituality.

Having gone through fire leads to a personal maturity and strength. In spite of the cruelty of the trauma, there is a change, a transformation, a finding of one’s identity. This can be an opportunity. This opportunity is in no way a justification of the trauma, but all work with traumatised people is based on the recognition that there can be post-traumatic growth; and that it is never too late. And positive stories of transformation can serve as a roadmap to find the way out of the depths.

Was ist posttraumatisches Wachstum?

Speaking to the Stars: The meeting place between Myth and autobiographical storytelling

17th - 24th July 2019

with Roi Gal Or  and  Stella Kassimati

Join us for 8 days in this Ancient Cretan landscape to explore the dwelling places of Homer's Gods and Goddesses by the sea, in caves and on mountains. Together we will discover the meeting place between Myth and autobiographical storytelling, bringing to life our personal journey , celebrating human freedom and responsibility and how they are deeply connected with nature.

In the writings of Homer (1000 BC), the Gods were intimately involved in human affairs, controlling and guiding the destiny of human beings, but humans had very limited freedom. Today individual freedom is of great value, often at the expense of our relationship with the natural world.  Our freedom is essential, yet we long for connection, guidance and inspiration at a time when it seems the Gods and Goddesses have grown silent.

In the village of Amari, cradled in the foothills of the majestic Psiloriti (Idi) mountain, we will walk the paths of the ancients, creatively and playfully discover new ways of communicating with ourselves, with nature and with each other.

Prices and Booking   (All prices are in euros. Please disregard the £ sign)

 Expenses NOT included in prices:

- Travel to and from Amari
- Personal and travel insurance cover
- Personal drinks, e.g. wine with meals

Personal Storytelling Intensive

With Sue Hollingsworth and Stella Kassimati

15th September – 6th October 2019

This 3-week storytelling training focuses on the telling of real life, autobiographical stories to tell to a group of listeners. By the end of the course you will have the skills necessary to shape and craft any story that you want to tell, whether it's around the kitchen table to your family and friends or to a hall or school packed full of people.

Many people these days have a story to tell: it might be an important moment in their lives, something funny or sad that involved members of the family that are not with them any more, or their personal involvement in a larger, historical happening.

But there are many questions about how to do this well:

How can we share a true story so that it is not just egotistical?

How can we tell a story as if it were a gift to our listeners?

How can we move people, touch them and help them to see more clearly what it is to be human?

How do we shape our life stories so that they will be remembered and passed on?

How can we stand in our voices and words and be completely present, revealing our whole selves?

The course will include practical story crafting and coaching in small groups. There will be maximum of 12 students to ensure individual attention. Some storytelling experience is beneficial but beginners will also be considered. A good working knowledge of English is required.
