Stella Kassimati - Chair
Stella is from Amari. She is a bi-lingual storyteller specializing in Folktales, Greek Myths and storytelling workshops. Stella was brought up with the myths and legends of the Greek Gods and Heroes, but it wasn't until she studied Storytelling that she realized their full power. Now her work revolves around sharing her passion with adults and children in the UK and in Greece.
Στέλλα Κασιμάτη Πρόεδρος Η Στέλλα κατάγεται από το Αμάρι. Είναι αφηγήτρια ιστοριών με ειδίκευση στα παραδοσιακά παραμύθια, τους ελληνικούς μύθους και τα εργαστήρια αφήγησης. Η Στέλλα μεγάλωσε με τους μύθους και τους θρύλους Ελλήνων θεών και ηρώων, χωρίς όμως να έχει πλήρη συνείδηση της δυναμικής τους μέχρι που σπούδασε Αφήγηση. Τώρα με τη δουλειά της μοιράζεται το πάθος της με ενήλικες και παιδιά από την Αγγλία και την Ελλάδα.
Maria Kalomenopoulou - Secretary
Maria was born in Crete and moved to Thessaloniki in 1971 to study in the University; she taught as a lecturer in Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and later became a medical doctor, specializing in Radiology, which she has been practicing since 1990. She moved to Rethymno in 2001 and has been working in the local hospital ever since. Her childhood experiences in Amari are unique and she is deeply moved by the effort towards the revitalization of her father's village.
Μαρία Καλομενοπούλου – Γραμματέας. Η Μαρία γεννήθηκε στην Κρήτη και μετακόμισε στη Θεσσαλονίκη το 1971 για να φοιτήσει στο Πανεπιστήμιο· δίδαξε ως λέκτορας στο Τμήμα Βιολογίας του Α.Π.Θ. και αργότερα τελείωσε την ιατρική σχολή και ειδικεύτηκε στην Ακτινολογία, την οποία εξασκεί από το 1990. Μετακόμισε στο Ρέθυμνο το 2001 και από τότε δουλεύει στο τοπικό νοσοκομείο. Έχει μοναδικές εμπειρίες από την παιδική της ηλικία στο Αμάρι και τη συγκινούν βαθιά οι προσπάθειες αναζωογόνησης του πατρικού της χωριού.
Αrtemis Apostolaki - Treasurer
Artemis has studied Greek literature, violoncello and has recently completed a PhD in the field of music psychology in the University of Hull, UK. Her bonds with Amari are particularly strong, having lived there the most amazing experiences of childhood, and this is the main reason for her being a member of Friends of Amari.
Άρτεμις Αποστολάκη έχει σπουδάσει Ελληνική φιλολογία και βιολοντσέλο και πρόσφατα ολοκλήρωσε το διδακτορικό της στον τομέα της μουσικής ψυχολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του στην Αγγλία. Οι δεσμοί της με το Αμάρι είναι ιδιαίτερα ισχυροί, καθώς εκεί έχει περάσει τις πιο συναρπαστικές στιγμές της παιδικής ηλικίας· αυτός είναι και ο κυριότερος λόγος για τον οποίο είναι μέλος των Φίλων του Αμαρίου.

Kathleen van der Weerd - Member. "I am a storyteller who loves natural fibres and textile crafts. I love the ways in which handwork and storycraft inform and enrich each other. I like to explore the ways in which we can express story imagery with our hands, using paper and fibres, cloth of all kinds, and all the bright elements of nature. I love being one of the Friends of Amari, and am really proud to have been a member from the very beginning. I hope to visit many times for connection, inspiration, reflection, and delight."
Kathleen van der Weerd - Μέλος. "Είμαι αφηγήτρια και επίσης δουλεύω με φυσικές ίνες και υφασμάτινα εργόχειρα. Λατρεύω τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η χειροτεχνία και η αφήγηση μπλέκονται και εμπλουτίζουν η μία την άλλη. Μου αρέσει να εξερευνώ τρόπους με τους οποίους μπορούμε να εκφράσουμε τις εικόνες μιας ιστορίας με τα χέρια μας, χρησιμοποιώντας χαρτί και ίνες, υφάσματα κάθε είδους, καθώς και τα πλούτο των στοιχείων της φύσης. Αγαπώ τους Φίλους του Αμαρίου και είμαι περήφανη που υπήρξα μέλος από το ξεκίνημα του Συλλόγου μας. Madeleine Grove has been working with healing for 30 years - as a nurse and homeopath and for many years made remedies by hand at Helios homeopathic pharmacy. She practices at clinics in Kent, Sussex and London. She is an award-winning storyteller and in all her work explores the power of story to heal and transform.

Deirdre C. Stiles - Member. Deirdre was born in Dallas, Texas where (almost) everyone is a born story teller. She loves to write, travel and take long walks. Actively involved on several not-for-profit organizations over the years, Deirdre has a special affinity for Amari and is delighted to be a part of the revitalization of this beautiful village. Her love of languages led Deirdre to complete a degree in French and live for a year in France. Currently, she divides her time between the US and England.
Deirdre C. Stiles – Μέλος. Γεννήθηκε στο Ντάλας του Τέξας, όπου (σχεδόν) όλοι είναι παραμυθάδες από γεννησιμιού τους. Αγαπά το γράψιμο, τα ταξίδια και τους μεγάλους περιπάτους. Έχοντας συμμετάσχει ενεργά σε διάφορες μη κερδοσκοπικές οργανώσεις για πολλά χρόνια, η Ντίρντρι έχει ιδιαίτερη αδυναμία στο Αμάρι και χαίρεται ιδιαίτερα που βοηθά στην αναζωογόνηση αυτού του πανέμορφου χωριού. Η αγάπη της για τη γλώσσα την οδήγησε να σπουδάσει Γαλλικά και να ζήσει στη Γαλλία για ένα χρόνο· η ζωή της είναι μοιρασμένη ανάμεσα στην Αμερική και την Αγγλία.
Voula Generalis was born in the village of Vistagi in the Amari Valley. After completing high school she went to the University of Athens to study Law. She stayed in Athens and worked for the Ministry of Finance for thirty five years in the customs department. Now she has retired, she takes care of her beautiful granddaughters but she never misses an opportunity to go to the cinema or theatre nor to enjoy music and reading.
Η Βούλα Γενεράλη γεννήθηκε στη Βισταγή Αμαρίου και μετά το γυμνάσιο έφυγε στην Αθήνα για να σπουδάσει στη Νομική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Εγκαταστάθηκε μόνιμα στην Αθήνα, όπου υπηρέτησε επί 35 χρόνια στον τελωνειακό κλάδο του Υπουργείου Οικονομικών. Τώρα, συνταξιούχος πια, φροντίζει τα εγγονάκια της χωρίς να παραλείπει να παρακολουθεί σινεμά, θέατρο, μουσική, διάβασμα.
Geoff Mead - Member. Geoff is a graduate of the School of Storytelling and passionate about stories and storytelling. He regularly performs traditional stories and teaches storytelling at venues in UK and as far afield as Spain, Canada and Japan. He has also taken story-work into a wide variety of organisational settings and in 2007 he co-founded the Centre for Narrative Leadership, a not-for-profit organisation established to develop the field of storytelling and narrative leadership in organisations. Geoff has four grown up children, five grandchildren and an entirely unreasonable love of Morgan sports cars. He fell in love with Amari during his first visit there in 2006 with his partner Chris Seeley.
Geoff Mead - Μέλος Ο Τζεφ είναι απόφοιτος της Σχολής Αφήγησης και παθιασμένος με τις ιστορίες και την αφήγηση. Δίνει συχνά παραστάσεις με παραδοσιακές ιστορίες και διδάσκει την τέχνη της αφήγησης στην Αγγλία αλλά και σε Ισπανία, Καναδά και Ιαπωνία. Έχει διευρύνει τη χρήση της αφήγησης σε μια ποικιλία εταιρικών δραστηριοτήτων και το 2007 έγινε συνιδρυτής του Centre for Narrative Leadership, έναν μη κερδοσκοπικό οργανισμό με σκοπό να αναπτύξει τη σχέση μεταξύ της αφήγησης και της διοικητικής ηγεσίας σε επιχειρήσεις. Ο Τζεφ έχει τέσσερα ενήλικα παιδιά, πέντε εγγόνια κι ένα παράλογο πάθος για τα αγωνιστικά αυτοκίνητα Morgan. Ερωτεύτηκε το Αμάρι από την πρώτη του επίσκεψη το 2006, με την σύντροφό του Chris Seeley.
Hannah MacDowall works as a storyteller with people going through transitions - especially the retirement transition. She support them to think through and reflect on the stories they have lived and what they want to live into. She does some performance storytelling in her local community and when a big story grabs her, and she also works with social entrepreneurs and charities training then in how to craft biographical stories to explore who they are and what they want to communicate. Other than that, she looks after her niece for one day a week and helps out with bee keeping at her local community garden
Roi Gal-Or, co-carrier of the School of Storytelling at Emerson College, UK as well as teaching storytelling at the University of Sussex in Brighton. He performs as a storyteller for various audiences and is a leader of international workshops dealing with group and personal development using stories, social games and biographical work.

Annette Filippo’s first storytelling course was in Amari 2014, right after graduating as a Biographical Counselor with a degree in ‘Meaningfulness & Spirituality’. In Amari she not only fell in love with the place, but also with the Greek Myths. After taking more storytelling courses in the UK, Annette founded her own enterprise for personal storytelling sprekendjij.nl. Now she is happy to combine her counseling and teaching skills with her heart knowledge of Le Petit Prince, one of her favorite tools while working with people’s life stories. She is grateful for initiatives like Amari and very proud to be Friend of.
Suzanne Hillen 'As I enjoy people who are true to their own; the story of Stella, her family and the village of Amari struck a chord with me. Any initiative that supports a community is close to my heart, as it is the only way, we human beings will make things work! I am a writer and organiser of a diverse range of local activities and look forward to spend some 'time off' in Crete with the ripe grapes getting picked, the sun shining and the sea glistening in the distance!'

Michl Zirk lives near Nuremberg (Germany). During a lot of years work as dramatic adviser in theatre. Storyteller since 1998.
He tells stories of all types (fairy-tales, magic-tales, sufi-tales, zen-tales, Greek Myths, short stories as well as stories from the bible or the “Decamerone”).He tells in the story-telling tradition, without a fixed text, but with gesture and mimic art. He tells as well for children as for adults. Since 1998 he organizes storytelling projects and festivals. From 2012 till 2018 he was president of the association of Storytellers for the German speaking countries.He is member of the friends of Amari because he loves Crete, he admires the nature as well as the culture and doesn’t want that all this is getting destroyed by financial interests. And he likes to collaborate with colleagues from many countries because this collaboration is an authentic work for peace and understanding.
Alexandros Generalis. I was born in Athens and I have loved Crete, its feasts, its melodies and its dances since I was a young boy. I studied IT in the University of Athens and currently work for a telecommunications company. I also perform Cretan dances with a well-known traditional group, with which we have danced in Greece, Cyprus, China, Australia and the USA.
I enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters and play sports. The happiest memories of my life are with my parents during summer holidays in Amari. Whenever possible, I try to go back to our villages, close to friends and family. I wish for our children to love our land and our traditions as much as we do.
Aλέξανδρος Γενεράλης. Γεννήθηκα στην Αθήνα και από μικρός αγάπησα την Κρήτη, τα γλέντια, τους σκοπούς και τους χορούς της.Σπούδασα Πληροφορική στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών και δουλεύω σε εταιρία τηλεπικοινωνιών. Χορεύω κρητικούς χορούς σε πολύ γνωστό λαογραφικό όμιλο με τον οποίο έχω συμμετάσχει σε εκδηλώσεις στην Ελλάδα, την Κύπρο, την Κίνα, την Αυστραλία και την Αμερική. Περνάω τον ελεύθερο μου χρόνο με τη γυναίκα και τις κόρες μου και κάνω αθλητισμό. Έχω συνδέσει τα ωραιότερα μου χρόνια με τους γονείς μου και τις καλοκαιρινές διακοπές στο Αμάρι. Όποτε είναι δυνατόν προσπαθώ να βρίσκομαι στα χωριά μας κοντά σε φίλους και συγγενείς. Εύχομαι τα παιδιά μας να αγαπήσουν τον τόπο και τις παραδόσεις όσο κι εμείς.

Kitty Hagenbach was brought up in Ireland, she now lives in England, has two sons, is a psychotherapist and founder member of Friends of Amari and of Babiesknow.
She fell in love with Amari on firstsight.

Sue Hollingsworth Sue has been performing and teaching storytelling for over 20 years. She is the Director of the Centre for Biographical Storytelling, a Founder of the International School of Storytelling and a Founding Member of the Centre for Narrative Leadership.
She is the co-author of the best-selling book The Storyteller's Way: Sourcebook for Inspired Storytelling and is currently finishing another book on telling biographical or personal stories. As a founding member of Friends of Amari she enjoys not only being in the village but also working with stories there. Apart from all this good stuff, she also really enjoys singing, dancing, walking, having fun with the people she works with and loves (often the same thing) and her “free range” lifestyle. Peter Mohan, Storytelling was a key factor in Peter setting up his own business in 2009. The core driver behind the work that Peter does is enabling individuals and teams to be the best that they can be. His work draws on cutting edge knowledge of brain science and emotional intelligence as well as the inspiration and learning to be had from storytelling.
Working with traditional and personal stories provides a variety of ways of helping people to learn key lessons, tap into the best of themselves and develop their self-confidence. Working in this way engages us both mentally and emotionally and for adults, it is an enjoyable way of re-evoking our childhood spirit of learning and openness. In addition to using storytelling with organisations and on personal development programmes, Peter also hosts monthly storytelling gatherings in his home in Dublin, Ireland.
As part of his storytelling development, Peter attended a 3-week Personal Storytelling Intensive Programme in Amari in 2017. The programme was a powerful experience. He was inspired by the Friends of Amari vision, so he subsequently joined the Friends of Amari. Away from work, Peter’s main hobby is Irish traditional music. In addition to playing in informal pub sessions and some composing work, he plays in a band doing gigs of children’s songs with Irish traditional music arrangements. www.clearmind.ie
Nikolaos and Angela Kassimatis are married since 2004 and live currently in Abu Dhabi. Both work in the hotel industry, were they also met. Angela is originally from Athens with roots in Peloponese but after marriage with Nikolaos she has become part of the Amari family. Nikolaos who was born in South Africa, came to Athens when he was only 4 years old. Since that time he has grown into his Greek, Cretan roots, as both his parents originate from Amari. Even though Nikolaos and Angela currently are based far from Crete they always visit Amari at least once a year to enjoy the peace and quiet of the small village, relax with the traditions of the area and to refill their batteries for the next year.
Νικόλαος και Άντζελα Κασιμάτη Είναι παντρεμένοι από το 2004 και δουλεύουν στις ξενοδοχειακές επιχειρήσεις, όπου και γνωρίστηκαν. Η Άντζελα κατάγεται από την Αθήνα, με ρίζες στην Πελοπόννησο, αλλά μετά το γάμο της με τον Νικόλαο έγινε μέρος της Αμαριώτικης οικογένειας. Ο Νικόλαος γεννήθηκε στη Νότιο Αφρική αλλά έζησε στην Αθήνα από 4 χρονών. Από τότε γνώρισε και αγάπησε και τις Ελληνικές και Κρητικές του ρίζες, καθώς και οι δύο του γονείς έχουν καταγωγή από το Αμάρι. Παρόλο που ο Νικόλαος και η Άντζελα μένουν μακριά από την Κρήτη, επισκέπτονται πάντα το Αμάρι τουλάχιστον μια φορά το χρόνο για να απολαύσουν την ηρεμία και την ησυχία του χωριού, να χαλαρώσουν μέσα στις τοπικές παραδόσεις και να γεμίσουν τις μπαταρίες τους για την επόμενη χρονιά.
Maritha Nielsen is a Storyteller, artist and teacher. She has been working as a storyteller since 2000, telling stories at local, national and international events. She was the initiative taker of the story telling project "Odin's Eye", as part of celebrating that capital city of culture in 2008 in Stavanger, Norway. There were 15.000 listeners to the different storytelling events starting already in 2007. We see now that after all these events, storytelling has become more know and more people come to storytelling events in this part of Norway. Maritha visited Amari and wants to support this wonderful place because of its uniqueness. A good place for workshops, and a place where storytellers from all over the world can come to deepen their work. What better inspiration than to be looking at the mountain where Zeus was born when deepening in any kind of storytelling work. To have an international centre for storytelling in Amari is like placing the modern centre for storytelling in the heart of where the stories once begun. From all my heart I wish Amari to blossom. Με πρωτοβουλία της ιδρύθηκε το αφηγηματικό project “Odin’s Eye” (To μάτι του Οντίν), ως μέρος των εορταστικών εκδηλώσεων για την πολιτιστική πρωτεύουσα 2008 στο Stavanger της Νορβηγίας· ήδη από το 2007 το εγχείρημα συγκέντρωσε 15.000 θεατές στις αφηγηματικές παραστάσεις. Μετά από αυτές τις εκδηλώσεις, η αφήγηση ιστοριών έγινε ευρύτερα γνωστή και προσέλκυσε περισσότερο κόσμο σε αντίστοιχες εκδηλώσεις σ’εκείνη την περιοχή της Νορβηγίας. Η Μαρίτα επισκέφθηκε το Αμάρι και θέλησε να στηρίξει αυτό το θαυμάσιο, μοναδικό μέρος, κατάλληλο για σεμινάρια αλλά και για τόπο συγκέντρωσης αφηγητών απ’όλον τον κόσμο που θέλουν να εμβαθύνουν στη δουλειά τους. Και τι καλύτερη έμπνευση μπορεί να βρεθεί για οποιαδήποτε εμβάθυνση σε αφήγηση από το να κοιτάζει κανείς το βουνό που γεννήθηκε ο Δίας: η δημιουργία ενός διεθνούς κέντρου αφήγησης στο Αμάρι είναι σαν να τοποθετεί κάποιος το σύγχρονο κέντρο αφήγησης στην καρδιά της αφήγησης, εκεί που κάποτε άρχισαν να λέγονται οι ιστορίες. Gauri Raje is a storyteller and anthropologist who lives and works both in India and the UK. In her life journey as a migrant, she has begun to realise that her birthplace may not always be where she is 'from'. She works extensively in storytelling with migrants in the UK. She works multilingually with personal stories, folk and fairy tales and epics. She also facilitates multilingual workshops on storytelling and narrative work, and loves to collaborate with artists from different disciplines. She has been going to Amari for nearly 5 years - it feels like her story-home.
Olivia Olsen’s work springs from dance and movement. She tours the solo work Parzival and Penelope, The Odyssey through her Eyes. Olivia toured Europe in Charles Dickens Hard Times. In the play The Syringa Tree by Pamela Gien, a single actor plays twenty-two characters. Olivia’s performance in this allowed her to source her movement background and early childhood memories of South Africa. It ran in Canada and the US.
Other favorite roles are Bed Among the Lentils, Lettice in Lettice and Lovage, Valentina in The Bay at Nice and Cassandra in Agamemnon. In Nijinsky Strings on a Rose she played various people in Nijinsky’s life opposite a dancer, and, Night Breath set in the Bosnian War.
Stray Dogs a play Olivia has written will run at Park Theatre in London in November 2019. A story of the poet Anna Akhmatova living in the great purges of the Soviet Union.
Amari, those hills, scents, the air, sun, groves, grasses and flowers with the Mediterranean lapping nearby are home to me. The people close to Amari are dear to me, this community is a well.
Mia Verbeelen was working as a theatre director in the Netherlands when storytelling came on her way in 1992. During 13 years she was one of the 8 members of a storytelling company in Tiel, a company that played a significant role in the revival of storytelling in the Netherlands.
In the beginning of 2000 she started to work as independant storyteller.
She developed her storytelling talent and her repertoire, but also used her organising skills for the development of the art of storytelling: she was envolved with 9 storytelling festivals in the Netherlands (4 in Utrecht and 5 in Amsterdam) and was board member of the Foundation of Storytelling in the Netherlands.
Since 2007 Mia Verbeelen is member of the staff and workshop leader at the Vertelacademie in Utrecht. She gives basic storytelling courses and workshops in Alden-Biesen (B), Utrecht and Zwolle.
In 2006 she returned to her hometown Antwerp in Belgium, after 30 years living in Holland
There she has a part-time job as a storyteller for children in a beautiful fairytale-house in the middle of a parc, near the centre of Antwerp.
In 2015 she was Storytelling Ambassador for Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium).
Dawn Ellis has been a storyteller in one way or another most of her life – as an actor, broadcaster, writer and performer. She has a penchant for ancient myths and wonder tales from all over the world, especially the
ones that put down roots inside us, and add spice and meaning to our lives.
Every summer she tells tales under the stars on a Greek island, and the rest of the year performs in clubs, festivals and private celebrations. Recently she has performed at Pentameters Theatre, Hampstead, Bread and Roses, Clapham and in Battersea for the Wandsworth Arts Festival. This summer she will perform a new story at the Oxford Storytelling festival.
She studied Myth with Dr Martin Shaw for 3 years, Storytelling with Nell Phoenix and with Hugh Lupton and Stella Kassimati at the International School of Storytelling. She first came to Amari to study The Odyssey for a week with Martin Shaw. Meanwhile, she created ‘The Call of the Wild Twin’ workshops and also teaches Storytelling and Presence in organisations – with a mission to share storytelling skills with people who can make a difference.
For the past 20 years Dawn has also been working in depth with leaders in organisations all over the world on Mindsets, Personal Leadership and Innovation.
She is an obsessive gardener and escapes to her precious allotment whenever the city gets too much. She has been in love with the natural world for as long as she can remember, loves yoga and dance – and is magnetised to Amari because of its magnificent unspoilt nature, deep mythological roots, and the stoical resilience of the people.
Ashley Ramsden is the founding Director of the School of Storytelling at Emerson College, the longest established centre of its kind in the United Kingdom. He is also co-founder of Storytelling in Organisations, a consultancy working with the transformational power of stories in the business world.
