Dionysian Week

27 August - 3 September,
with Stella Kassimati and Heleni Achilleos

Our very special week in Amari. A time for winemaking and drinking. A time to be close to Dionysus, the God of Wine, and the Earth. We will visit the shrines in the mountains and tell stories in places that inspired some of the oldest Greek myths! We will make a Cretan Labyrinth and walk it, following Ariadne's golden thread. We will get to know the land and share the stories that arise in us from walking, talking and being in this age-old landscape. Come and enjoy the abundant simplicity of Amari!

Myth and Music
24-30 October
with Hugh Lupton and Ross Daly

A 7day residential master workshop for experienced storytellers and/or musicians to explore how the disciplines of music and the spoken word can work together to heighten the listener's experience.
This is a rare chance to work on Greek mythological material in the landscape that generated it with a world renowned storyteller and lyricist, specialising in British and Classical mythology, who has worked intensively with Greek myth and a musician who is one of the greatest exponents of the music of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The course will use Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' as its source material, using the Greek rather than the Roman pantheon... and wherever possible linking with local sites and will include shared walks into the landscape and freedom for participants to wander and explore for themselves.

The plan is for tellers and musicians to work separately at first. Musicians working with Ross and exploring some of the indiginous melodic forms. Storytellers working with Hugh and developing stories from the Metamorphoses. Mid-week storytellers and musicians will begin to collaborate, developing performances that combine music and myth, that explore the spoken, chanted and sung word and the music that underpins it. The week will end with a concert.

This master workshop is for experienced storytellers or musicians or both.

Cost per person, excl. travel for members - €400 or £360
Cost per person, excl. travel for non-members - €420 or £380

includes: tuition, accommodation, meals, advice on travelling and guest membership fee for non members

Mixing the Muses: Storytelling for today
4-9 April
with Michael Harvey

In the spirit of the drama festivals of Ancient Greece that staged the best of ‘high' and ‘low' art side by side we will explore the place of high tragedy and broad comedy in our storytelling. We will aim to bring together both the sublime and the earthy in our telling in a celebration of the fullness of life, our own unique individual voices and the audience's engagement and response.

The work will be practical with ample opportunities to prepare material, work individually and in groups, share work in progress and receive constructive feedback

This course aims to find a place for both catharsis and the belly laugh in contemporary storytelling. Please bring stories that reflect these two qualities to work on and share.

Cost per person, excl. travel for members - €310 or £280
Cost per person, excl. travel for non-members - €330 or £300
